For a kid on a hot summer day, there is no greater feeling than jumping off the diving board into a refreshing pool of water. This summer take the kids on a grand adventure visiting all of America’s great “natural” swimming pools and fun.
First stop, Sliding Rock, Brevard North Carolina, this natural rockslide is 60 foot and ends in a seven-foot deep pool. Is the ride down bumpy? Absolutely, but the fun is worth every minute. The only suggestion from riding down that natural waterslide, wear something a bit thicker than a plain swimsuit bottom. Sliding Rock is located off Highway 276 and in the summer time has lifeguards on duty, and requires a $1.00 entrance fee.
Second stop, on this swimming hole vacation Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Chesterton, Indiana, enjoy the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. Is that right, beaches off a lake? That is correct, the dunes of Lake Michigan is home to more than 15,000 acres of dunes, marshes, and more. Located in the National Park, this hot spot offers more than just relaxing on the beach for the day; they also have dune trails ready for exploration.
Third stop, get in the family car and head to Austin, Texas to Barton Springs Pool, this spring stays an even 68° year round. The reason for its constant temperature is due to the spring being fed by underwater natural springs. When everyone in the entire family is finished taking a refreshing, yet chilly, dip in the springs, visit all Austin’s many different music venues, and shops.
Lastly, Lake Bemidji located in Bemidji Minnesota, home to the legends of the lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox. The story goes that “giant” Paul Bunyan; man of great strengths was responsible for creating a watering hole for his equally large blue ox, Babe. It is from this myth that the locals explain the creation of the Great Lakes. The Lake Bemidji comes from the legend of Paul Bunyan and his ox being lost in a blizzard and their footprints were where the lakes took form.
In summary, there so many great places within a few days’ drive to spend a week vacation with the family having fun, cooling down in nature’s swimming pools, and making the most of hot summer days.
