The Turks and Caicos Islands are included in many of the itineraries of Carnival Cruise Lines, or a 90 minute plane trip from Miami. This group consists of 40 islands and cays, with the main islands being Grand Turk (Turk Island) and Providenciales (Caicos Island).
Like most Caribbean islands, the Turks and Caicos have a warm climate, white sandy beaches, and beautiful blue seas. Despite their obvious attractions, these islands have until r recently escaped the notice of most tourists, and remain largely unspoiled. The coastline features many secluded bays, where the clear sea laps gently at the white sand and wild donkeys wander freely.
Wander the narrow lanes of Cockburn town, on Grand Turk, and adjust to the relaxed pace of life here. Renting a car, scooter, or dune buggy will allow you to explore nearby historic villages. Alternatively, horseback riding along the beach is an especially enjoyable way to see the coast. Exploring underwater is also possible, with Governor’s Beach offering one of the region’s best snorkeling spots. It is also possible to take a day trip to Salt Cay for snorkeling or scuba diving around the coral reef. The seas around the Turks and Caicos are remarkably calm and clear, offering excellent visibility for divers and snorkelers.
Providenciales is slightly more touristy than the other islands, and offers a range of activities including kite surfing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing. The Turks and Caicos’ only 18-hole golf course is also located here, in beautiful surroundings. In the evening, reggae, rock and blues musicians often perform at local bars, so grab a drink and take the chance to get down to some fabulous island beats.
If you’re looking for secluded natural beauty, an excursion to the uninhabited Gibbs Cay gives great opportunities for exploration and wildlife watching. The shallow waters around this island teem with stingrays, naturally inquisitive creatures which often approach snorkelers and swimmers.
