Traveling is a wonderful way to immerse oneself in something completely different from what one is accustomed. Travel opens up new cultures, traditions, scenery, overall a new way of life, if even for just the week. If a person were planning a week away to Europe or some of the popular tropic islands, it is important to know and consider a few things before traveling to any vacation destination.
If this is the first international trip, then be prepared to go through customs. When traveling internationally consider purchasing a cross body bag or money belt before the trip they should be small enough to keep close to the body at all times, but big enough to fit passport, driver’s license, ticket, and cash.
When traveling abroad, it is imperative that copies of all the important documentation taken on the trip is given to a family member, along with the trip itinerary. Also, keep a copy of the documents tucked away safe inside the suitcase, “just in case” for identifying purposes at the U.S. Embassy.
If choosing an unfamiliar travel destination, it is important to learn and research the culture and proprietary forms of customs. For instance, in many of the countries in Africa it is highly offensive for a woman to wear pants. When packing for a trip to one of the countries in Africa, pack a few long dress skirts. All cultures are different, so it is essential to know expectations of dressing, local food, etc.
If one has a set itinerary for the whole of the trip, research the historic landmark attractions and dress code. According to an article written on Frommers.com the writer states, “Remember that some churches, such as St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, won’t allow you to enter if you’re wearing shorts,” so it is important to know the standards of dress for any tourist site planned for visiting during the trip.
Overall, traveling is fun and can be quite exciting creating new memories and learning about new cultures, but do not go unprepared.
